Finnish digital health company Netmedi has begun cooperation with Turku University Hospital (Tyks) Cancer Center’s late-effect follow-up clinic.
Kaiku Health web application will be used to systematically collect data about current state of health and quality of life, as well as any possible late adverse events in patients that have undergone cancer treatment during childhood or adolescence. The collected data will also be used to analyze future medical research needs. Additionally, Kaiku Health provides a secure and easy-to-use online communication channel between the patients and medical staff.

”With Kaiku Health we can easily communicate with our current and previous patients. Digital follow-up enables us to react timely to patients’ symptoms or other problems. We can guide the patient to the right place at the right time, and offer concrete support online. Depending on the situation we either invite the patients to the clinic or guide them to primary health care. Ongoing communication with the patients also provides us with valuable information about late-effects, which we can use to develop cancer care,” says Päivi Lähteenmäki Senior Consultant in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, from Tyks Cancer Center.
Coordinator from Tyks Cancer Center, Mervi Siekkinen, highlights the importance of developing innovations in health care: ”With a web-based follow-up we are able to provide data-driven and timely care for our patients, and we can support them in daily life also after the therapy period.”
There are currently about 7 000 adults in Finland who have survived early age onset cancer. Approximately 1 200 of them live in the operational area of Tyks. The aim of the Cancer Center is to have 200 cancer survivors join the digital follow-up during 2016. Digitizing the follow-up is related to Tyks’ development project for improving the health and quality of life of cancer survivors. The project was assigned to Tyks as part of the establishment of Comprehensive Cancer Center Finland (FICAN).
